Countering Foreign Propaganda & Disinformation by Strengthening the Capacity of Media & Journalists

The objective of this project is to support media and journalists to tackle foreign disinformation, safeguard the Macedonian media space against authoritarian propaganda and put forward reliable and objective contents and counter-narratives that could help citizens build an infomed opinion. It is motivated by the current situation where Russia and China seem to be joining forces to undermine democracies and freedom of expression around the world and strives to work on the specific national context to build the capacities and resilience of journalists and media workers to face these challenges. To that effect, it proposes a series of activities related to awareness raising, capacity building and direct support to journalists to learn how and to practically develop objective and well-argumented media contents to debunk Russian and Chinese propaganda and provide alternative and credible information sources. More broadly, it aims to foster a discussion among the journalist community on the challenges they face stemming from foreign (online and offline) influence operations and to put forward good practices to deal with these challenges, many of which will be developed through this project. For that purpose, the project leverages the symbiotic partnership of civil society and media, combining their expertise, capacity and strengths to maximise the outcomes.

In the context of the project, a round table was organized uniting relevant stakeholders from media outlets and media organizations, regulatory bodies and the civil society. You can read the working document summarizing the discussions in Macedonian and in English.
